Payments & tax

Get paid into your own account,
and keep what you sell.

Shoppers pay straight into the payment account you connect. The platform takes no commission on your sales, charges cards as orders ship, and calculates sales tax the same way at checkout and on the order.

Before your first sale: Taking live payments needs your connected payment account verified and live payments enabled for your store. Until both are done, your store can be built and tested but cannot take money.

Why it matters

The problems it takes off your plate

What merchants tell us goes wrong, and what the platform does about each one.

“Every sale lost a cut to the platform on top of card fees.”

No commission on your sales

You connect your own payment account and shoppers pay into it directly. The platform charges for your software plan, not a percentage of what you sell.

“We charged customers for things that had not left the building.”

Charge as it ships

Cards are authorised at checkout and captured for what actually ships, based on carrier, tracking, pickup or digital-delivery evidence.

“Shoppers gave up when checkout asked them to type a card number on a phone.”

One-tap wallets

Apple Pay and Google Pay are charged to the same account of yours, and a card that needs an extra check from its bank completes it instead of failing.

“The tax at checkout never matched the tax on the invoice.”

One tax calculation

Quoted tax and the tax saved on the order come from the same server calculation, with settings for tax on shipping, tax-inclusive prices, exemptions and where you are registered.

How it works

What happens behind the screen

  1. Connect your payment account

Complete Stripe’s hosted onboarding for your business, owner and bank details. The connection status updates as verification completes.

  2. Shoppers pay at checkout

Cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay are charged on your account. Totals, tax and delivery are calculated on the server, never taken from the browser.

  3. Capture as you fulfil

By default the card is authorised at checkout and captured for the items that ship, so money follows the goods.

  4. Refunds reverse correctly

A refund returns to the original payment method and reverses the related tax.

How to switch it on

The exact screens, in order. Nothing here needs a developer.

  1. Open your launch checklist

The Ready to Sell checklist shows what payment setup still needs and points to the step that finishes it.

  2. Connect and verify your account

Complete Stripe’s hosted onboarding for your business and bank details. You can leave and come back; the link resumes where you stopped.

  3. Check how you charge

Confirm the payment methods offered at checkout and the capture setting, which charges orders as they ship by default.

  4. Set up sales tax

Set tax on shipping, tax-inclusive pricing, a fallback rate and exemptions, then declare where you are registered under Marketplace Operations → Tax Nexus.

Straight answers

What it does not do yet

We would rather you know now than find out after you have planned around it.

  • 0% is the platform’s commission. Your payment processor’s own card fees still apply.
  • The platform does not decide where you owe tax or give tax advice. You declare your registrations and confirm obligations with an adviser.
  • The built-in tax table does not include combined local rates for every US city and county.
